Rewarding the winners of the online quiz “Reading the runes of the Kalevala epic”

In the reading room of the Scientific Library of Petrozavodsk State University, a solemn presentation of diplomas and prizes to the winners of the republican online competition “Reading the runes of the Kalevala epic” of students of universities, colleges, students of secondary schools and residents of the Republic of Karelia – the readers of the runes of the “Kalevala” epic in Karelian, Vepsian , Finnish.
The online competition “Reading the runes of the Kalevala epic” is dedicated to the Year of Karelian runes in the Republic of Karelia. The Karelian runes, which became the basis of the world famous Kalevala epic, containing information about the way of life of the Karelians, are one of the most important elements of the republic’s spiritual culture.

In 2021, the competition “Reading the runes of the Kalevala epic” was held for the third time.

The organizers of the competition are the Department of Baltic-Finnish Philology of the Institute of Philology of PetrSU, the Scientific Library of PetrSU, the Primary Trade Union Organization of PetrSU students. The competition partner is the Ministry of National and Regional Policy of the Republic of Karelia.

The competition is held in order to preserve the creative heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Republic of Karelia, popularize the Karelian-Finnish epic “Kalevala”, increase the creative activity of participants in the competition, generate interest in the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Republic of Karelia, popularize the Karelian, Vepsian, Finnish languages, and develop public speaking skills.

The competition was held in three nominations: 1) runes in the Karelian language (the Livik dialect, the Karelian dialect itself); 2) runes in the Vepsian language; 3) runes in Finnish. The winners were determined in three age groups: from 12 to 15 years old, from 16 to 23 and 24 years old and older.

Students of universities, colleges, secondary school students, residents of the Republic of Karelia who speak Karelian, Vepsian or Finnish languages ​​took part in the competition “Reading the runes of the Kalevala epic”.

The jury, considering the video recordings of the artistic reading of excerpts from the Kalevala epic sent from the participants, evaluated the pronunciation, the emotional-figurative expressiveness of the performance, and artistry.

In order to comply with preventive measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, the winners from Petrozavodsk were invited to the awards ceremony: students of Petrozavodsk State University, College of Technology and Entrepreneurship, students of Gymnasium No. 17, as well as school No. 34 with in-depth study of the Finnish language and the Finno-Ugric school named after .Elias Lönnrot.

The chairman of the competition committee, vice-rector for educational and social work of PetrSU Vasily Kuzmich Katarov, thanked all the participants of the quiz for their attention to the topic “Kalevala”, congratulated the winners of the competition.

Svetlana Gennadievna Kostina, a leading specialist of the Department of State Support of Indigenous Peoples of the Ministry of National and Regional Policy of the Republic of Karelia, a specialist of the Primary Trade Union Organization of students of PetrSU Vitaly Leonidovich Antipin, Associate Professor of the Department of Baltic-Finnish Philology of the Institute of Philology of PetrSU, Candidate of Philological Sciences Olga Yurievna Zhukova joined the congratulations.
