Rice University’s Chabad hosts sushi mixer to welcome students
Rice University’s Jewish students recently gathered at the Chabad Jewish Student Center for a reception, replete with handcrafted sushi and fellowship. Hosted by Rabbi Shmuli and Nechama Slonim, the group welcomed more than 100 students for food and friendship as a kickoff for the academic year.
“First of all, welcome,” the rabbi said during his short address to the collection of Owls. “We are so happy you are here connecting with the community. We want to invite you to join us every week here at your home away from home.”
One initiative Rabbi Slonim highlighted within Chabad at Rice University is a home-cooked, four-course Shabbat dinner that takes place on Friday nights and is free and open to Jewish students as well as people wanting to learn more about Jewish culture.
Jokingly, Rabbi Slonim said the dinners are more intricate than a Thanksgiving meal. The group also hosts a bevy of events throughout the year to cater to the needs, desires and traditions of Jewish students.
Perry Gilberd, a junior and president of Chabad at Rice University, described the fun-filled nature of the evening.
“The sushi social is our kickoff event to welcome new students as well as all the returning students,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for everyone to see who else is Jewish on campus and find out that there is a huge community of Jews who are very willing to engage and to be friendly with each other. It’s also meant to create a great time for everyone to enjoy!”
Chabad at Rice University sets into motion an array of programs and services to educate, inspire and uplift Jewish students from all walks of life.
