Rice University’s Owls Place Nine on Phil Steele Preseason All-AAC Team
Josh Pearcy leads a group of nine Rice football players that were named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-American Athletic Conference team, which was released Monday.
Pearcy was named to the first team, Luke McCaffrey and Ethan Onianwa were named to the second team, Bradley Rozner, Clay Servin and Myron Morrison made the third team and Jack Bradley and Gabriel Taylor were named to the fourth team. In addition Sean Fresch was named to the second team as a punt returner and fourth team as a cornerback.
Pearcy led the team with 6.5 sacks and a career-best 10.0 tackles for loss while recording 50 total tackles, including 22 solo.
McCaffrey led the Owls with 58 receptions. He was second on the team with 723 yards (ninth-most in school history), six touchdowns and 65.7 yards per game, while recording 12.5 yards per catch and recorded three 100-yard games.
Fresch led the team with 10 punt returns for 103 yards, averaging 10.3 yards per return. He also was third on the team with five pass breakups and recorded his first career interception at Louisiana Tech.
Onianwa is coming off a season that saw him earn C-USA All-Freshman Team honors after taking over as the starter at right tackle when the Owls faced USC in the 2022 opener, making 12 starts on the year.
Rozner led the team with 876 receiving yards, the seventh-most in a season in school history, and five 100-yard games. He was second on the team with 44 receptions and recorded 10 touchdowns, becoming the third player in school history with double-digit touchdown catches in a season. His 19.9 yards per catch ranked third in C-USA.
Servin has been a fixture at tackle for the Owls since 2019 and owns the longest active starting streak on the team with 38 consecutive games.
Morrison was second on the team with 73 toal tackles and 36 solo. He recorded 6.5 tackles for loss and had a pair of interceptions, against Houston and UTSA.
Bradley set career highs for receptions (28) and receiving yards (260) in 2022, while recording a pair of touchdowns against McNeese State and UTEP.
Taylor led the defensive backfield with 60 total tackles, including a team-high 39 unassisted tackles. He also tied for the team lead with two interceptions, including a 91-yard return against McNeese State, the third longest interception return in school history.
