Ridge Valley School celebrates World Population Day with an inter-house slogan writing competition
Gurugram: Our planet has a massive human population that is expected to hit 8 billion by the end of this year. While the population is expected to grow further, it is important to pay heed to the issues that arise with the rapid growth. To augment awareness on World Population Day, on July 11, 2022, Ridge Valley School in Gurugram organised an inter-house slogan writing competition for students in grades IX and X.
Overpopulation is a crucial issue, especially considering that world resources are depleting at an unsustainable rate. Awareness about the effects of overpopulation on development and nature was emphasised through creative slogans. The slogans were judged based on originality, relevance, and creativity. In addition, student council members debated on the topic titled “Increasing Human Population – Is it an asset?” Their convincing arguments expressed confidently provided a lot of insight.
Keeping with the theme of the day, School Principal Ms. Nidhi Tewari remarked, “Through these activities, our student got to learn not only about the population control issues but also what might be the consequences of expanding population on Mother Earth. We discussed important themes such as family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights among others.”
Yash Dube, a Grade XII student stated, “World Population Day isn’t really a popular, mainstream event. In fact, it was quite surprising to find out that such a day even exists and is observed globally! It’s exactly this lack of awareness that made the group discussion all the more potent and thought-provoking. Once we initiated the interaction on World Population Day and population in general, the immense significance of the subject dawned upon all of us.”
Adding further, Ishaan Chamoli of Grade XII commented, “Our discussion topic was whether the growing population is truly an asset or not. And the more we pondered on the question, the more we found that the answer wasn’t as simple as one might think. Great ideas, deep understanding, and nuanced arguments made the session really engaging.”
World Population Day is observed every year on 11th July in order to raise awareness about global population issues, including population control. The theme for World Population Day 2022 is “A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all.” According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF), the day “offers a moment to celebrate human progress”.
