RMIT: Students, alumni to stage light and audiovisual show for Melbourne Music Week
RMIT Culture is partnering with Melbourne Music Week to bring audiences an evening of music by Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS).
RMIT students and MESS alumni will take to The Capitol on 19 May for MESS Through The Roof, an electronic music showcase featuring an eclectic and genre-bending mix of live music.
Accompanying the music will be a light and sound show designed by Bachelor of Design (Digital Media) students in the Heightened Multisensory Experience Studio.
It promises to set the tone of the evening under a canopy of extraordinary lighting, with audiovisual works composed especially for The Capitol’s bespoke roof lighting system.
Producing the show are RMIT’s Associate Professor Darrin Verhagen, Dr Shaun Wilson and Dr Ben Byrne.
Byrne said the project was a fantastic opportunity to experience the beauty of The Capitol and the students’ work.
“It also demonstrates the exciting opportunities students are afforded at RMIT and how cutting-edge digital music and lighting can highlight historically-significant Melbourne architecture,” he said.
RMIT Culture’s Partnered Projects Manager, Ali Barker, said she was thrilled to be working with Melbourne Music Week and the City of Melbourne again.
“The City of Melbourne is a significant partner for us and the relationship with Melbourne Music Week and Melbourne Knowledge Week opens a world of collaborative possibilities and fantastic public outcomes for the whole community,” she said.
Melbourne Music Week producer Anna Paterson said fostering connections between participants has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her role.
“Being able to collaborate in this way has afforded the students not only valuable mentorship and professional skills development but the opportunity to perform on a world class stage,” she said.
MESS Through The Roof will feature RMIT artists The Weird Kids; Tracey Dinh (light) and Christine Kung (sound); Patricia Summers (light) and Rob Currulli (sound); Rob Curulli and 0F.digital and cal_um.
They’ll be joined by Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio alumni Catherine Ryan, R.P Downie, Reuben Lewis and Tiffany Alwis.
