RWTH: Artificial intelligence should warn of the consequences of heavy rain in the transport sector

On November 1, 2021, the project “ISRV – Intelligent, heavy rain-related flood risk warning in the transport sector” started. The Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management (IWW) at RWTH Aachen University, KISTERS AG, 4traffic and SCHWIETERING Ingenieure GmbH want to develop a real-time forecast system for heavy rain in the transport sector by 2024. Through the use of artificial intelligence, previous precipitation forecasts are to be expanded with punctual flood warnings and finally transmitted as warnings to navigation devices. In the event of a heavy rain event, traffic flows could be diverted in good time, depending on the water level, flow speed and traffic infrastructure.
