RWTH Breakthrough: Electrical Measurements of Cell Growth Pave the Way for Innovative Medical Therapies
The 5th Conference on Impedance-Based Cellular Assays (IBCA) took place at RWTH Aachen from September 4th to 6th, 2023. It was organized by Professor Sven Ingebrandt, head of the RWTH Institute for Materials in Electrical Engineering 1, and Professor Joachim Wegener from the Institute for Analytical Chemistry at the University of Regensburg.
The participants from Europe, the USA, South America and Asia exchanged ideas about developments and technologies for impedance-based cellular processes. These record the growth of human cells using electrical measurements and are becoming more and more important in regenerative medicine. The focus is on methods for restoring physical functions that have been lost due to illness or injury. The effects of drugs on the biological barrier properties of skin cells or on the blood-brain barrier or toxic effects on nerve cells can also be analyzed. The results contribute to the development of innovative therapies and new medical products for many diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s,
As part of the conference, companies presented their products to the specialist audience.
