RWTH: GreenTech Expo II Showcases Energy Research
As part of RWTH Aachen University’s Knowledge Hub and its current theme of Green Technology – Environmental Technology for a Sustainable Future, GreenTech Expo II – Energy will be held in front of Super C, Templergraben 57, from October 24 to November 10, 2022. The Knowledge Hub was established as a measure of the Excellence Strategy with the aim to strengthen the transparent and traceable transfer of knowledge to society. Innovative research contributions from RWTH, for example, in the areas of energy efficiency, environmentally friendly power generation, storage, and distribution of energy, draw attention to the major challenges posed by the transition to renewable energy sources.
The first GreenTech Expo in June 2022 was successful in informing a wide audience about the topic of Plastics and the Circular Economy at the Templergraben site, which was open to the public. The strong response prompted the University to present another public exhibition.
Banners measuring 3.50 x 1.80 meters showcase topics related to the changes in the energy system and the urgently needed energy transition. They provide information on how this can be successful and present new energy sources such as hydrogen besides numerous different research projects at RWTH. NAUTILUS, for example, aims to reduce the environmental footprint of maritime transportation by introducing an alternative hybrid genset for passenger ships through electrification and the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Visitors will also learn how noise reduction can create greater acceptance for wind turbines, how road surfaces or road infrastructure can be used for solar energy, how deep geothermal energy – i.e. using geothermal energy at depths of between 400 and 5,000 meters – can make a major contribution to a climate-neutral heating market, or how startup founders from RWTH have succeeded in offering an environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional electricity storage systems with sustainable electricity storage from used e-car batteries.
The second GreenTech Expo offers an appropriate overview of the upcoming winter and the energy-saving measures the German government has adopted to secure the national energy supply in the short and medium term. Supplementary QR codes and links lead to the websites of individual institutes, chairs, and startups, or short film clips and provide visitors with further information.
