RWTH: Pop-up Campus on the Future of Construction

The former Wüstenrot branch on Theaterstraße in Aachen is set to become an experimental field for climate-neutral construction with the Pop-up Campus on the Future of Construction. The joint project with the RWTH Faculty of Architecture with the City of Aachen, the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development at the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBSR) and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building will initially demonstrate the transformational ability of the building until September. The process will be exhibited in the form of a public window display.

This experimental exhibition design offers space for a wide range of projects and provides cross-university constructive impetus for the necessary transition to sustainable building. The aim is for architecture faculties all over Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium to get in contact with each other at the different events and for networking to be promoted through inter-faculty communication. Students’ research work developed at teaching and research institutions should be reflected in practice in the Pop-up Campus.

For example, a public experimentation workshop will be held from 1pm to 6 pm on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at the Pop-up Campus, Theaterstraße 92-94. The Making of Housing research network invites participants to jointly develop approaches for new housing in inner cities, define fields of experimentation, formulate solutions “beyond the standard”, and recruit fellow campaigners for ideas and projects. In addition to the City of Aachen, project partners include the ACademy for Collaborative Urban Development, Baukultur NRW, the Netzwerk Innenstadt NRW, and VdW Rheinland Westfalen.
