RWTH: Reputation as the key to success
How do I sharpen my scientific profile? How do I use science communication for self-marketing and how do I plan the next steps in my own career? The approximately 60 junior professors, junior research group leaders and postdocs pursued these and other questions as part of the Advanced Talents Day 2022 at RWTH Aachen University. The Advanced Talents Day is a cooperation between the RWTH, the University of Cologne and the Research Center Jülich. Professor Sabine Brück-Dürkop, RWTH Vice Rector for Human Resources and Young Scientists and patron of the event, welcomed the participants and all guests at RWTH.
An excellent scientific reputation is the key to a successful career in research and science. It is therefore important to communicate one’s own research results effectively and to be perceived as an expert in the scientific community. Current trends in science communication and self-marketing were therefore the focus of the Advanced Talents Day. Further topics were reforms in the evaluation of research achievements on the way to a professorship, cross-cutting issues such as gender equality and equal opportunities in science and individual career paths as well as questions of responsibility in research.
Advanced Talents Hub at RWTH
With the establishment of the Advanced Talents Hub, RWTH identifies young talents at the university who are aiming for a professorship or a permanent position in science. On the other hand, the university management would like to live up to its responsibility towards these outstanding researchers and support them in their personal and scientific development in the highly competitive professional environment. The Advanced Talents Hub therefore accompanies the talents in the development and focussing of their scientific careers. A broad portfolio for further training, advice and networking is available for this purpose, including comprehensive qualification for leadership and management tasks.
The hub is coordinated within the Center for Young Academics as a central point of contact, further education, advice and networking for all those interested in doing a doctorate, doctoral students, postdocs and advanced talents at RWTH, located in Department 12.0 – Personnel Development and Talent Management. Since 2021, all offers for personnel and career development for employees in science and administration have been bundled and systematically brought together within the department.
