RWTH: RWTH Historians Research the Formation of Europe

Following the decision of the Joint Science Conference of the Federal and State Governments, it is clear that eight new research projects can be accepted into the research program of the German science academies. At the same time, funding for the Academies Program was increased by three percent and will thus comprise a total volume of around 75 million euros in 2023.

The projects competing for these funds underwent a multi-stage selection process, and three projects from North Rhine-Westphalia persevered. Among them is a project at RWTH’s Chair of Medieval History headed by Professor Harald Müller: “The Formation of Europe due to Overcoming Division in the 12th Century” – a project of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts in partnership with the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

The selected projects reflect the unique Academies Program’s diversity in both their research topics and the disciplines involved. They are distinguished by their excellent academic quality, emphasizes the presidium of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. The joint research program of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities serves to develop, secure, and visualize Germany’s cultural heritage. It is currently the most extensive humanities and social science research program in Germany and is unique internationally. The program is jointly funded by the federal and state governments. The sponsors of the program and responsible for implementing the long-term projects are the partnering academies and the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
