RWTH University to Raise Rainbow Flag in Solidarity with International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia and Pride Month
May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). The International Day was established in 2005 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by queer individuals. To mark this special day, RWTH will once again raise the rainbow flag in front of the Main Building on May 17. It will also be on display throughout June to celebrate Pride Month. In this way, RWTH and the AStA Student Council are setting a colorful symbol for diversity and tolerance and creating visibility for the queer community at the University.
Pride Month: Film Screening and Self-Defense Workshop
In cooperation with the Apollo Kino, the Equal Opportunities Office, the Inclusion, Gender and Diversity Staff Unit (IGaD), the AStA, and the Queerreferat will be hosting a screening of the film Große Freiheit on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at 8 pm in the Apollo Kino. The film tells the story of a homosexual man in post-war Germany who repeatedly ends up in prison for his sexuality – a story of the anti-gay bias of German legislation and the slowly evolving friendship between two men.
Furthermore, the Equal Opportunities Office, in collaboration with the University Sports Center, is offering a self-defense workshop for FLINTA (which stands for Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Trans and Agender individuals) and queer students on Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 10 am to 3 pm. The participants explore de-escalation strategies and defense techniques in order to gain confidence to better handle discriminatory situations.
