RWTH: “Viega Cube Aachen” opened on Campus Melaten

The “Viega Cube Aachen” has now been opened in the test hall of the Chair for Energy Efficient Building at RWTH Aachen University. The research platform is used to develop products and methods to improve energy efficiency in the provision of hygienically safe drinking water. The Cube is a result of the close cooperation between RWTH and Viega GmbH & Co. KG.

The research subject of the new platform is innovative drinking water management, which reliably prevents hygiene risks due to stagnant water in the pipe system in buildings and automatically regulates hygiene-critical temperatures of the drinking water. With its modular structure, the Viega Cube also enables a drinking water management system to be linked with other building technology components. Various heat generators can be tested and evaluated, for example.

Interdisciplinary research

“At the Viega Cube Aachen we can research the latest methods in an interdisciplinary manner. This means that developments can be compared with practical requirements at a very early stage and further developed in an application-oriented manner, ”explains Professor Christoph van Treeck, holder of the Chair for Energy-Efficient Building e3D.

Ralf Baginski, Chief Technology Officer at Viega, confirms the benefits of interdisciplinary cooperation in future research projects: “The Viega Cube Aachen gives us the opportunity, together with research institutions and other companies, to advance innovations that contribute to intelligent and, at the same time, energy-efficient building technology.”

The students will also benefit to a large extent. Because van Treeck sees further added value in the strengthening of practice-oriented teaching with the cube, on which the technology and digital management of a drinking water system can be demonstrated.
