Seminar on “Women Empowerment” held at Anantnag
Anantnag: The Government Degree College for Women Anantnag in collaboration with Humanity, an NGO, organized a one day seminar on the theme “Women Empowerment” here Yesterday.. In his inaugural speech Dr. Ali Mohd Dar, Principal GDC Women Anantnag laid emphasis on imbibing the virtues of equality in our day to day life. He threw some light on the condition of women in the pre-Islamic world and how the religion of Islam came as a saviour for women and ensured their socio-economic upliftment.
Professor Naseem Shafaie, a well known Kashmiri poet, while speaking on the occasion, exhorted the audience to treat women with respect and compassion. She drew parallels between the western and sub-continental socio-cultural set-ups which either limit or help in the process of women empowerment. Dr. Javid Ahmad Dar from the Department of Political Science, University of Kashmir, presented a paper on “Women & the Western Classical Political Tradition”.
The speaker highlighted the fact that the Western classical political thinkers have been instrumental in degrading and debasing the agency of women. He said, “We live in a better world but not in a just world”. The last speaker Dr. Mohd Ashraf Bhat from GDC Women Anantnag talked about women empowerment in Islamic perspective.
