Short-term training programme held on “Infrastructure Safety Auditing System”
ALIGARH : The Department of Civil Engineering, Z.H. College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University organized a 3 Days Short-Term Training Programme (STTP) on “Infrastructure Safety Auditing System” under G20 sub-theme, “Disaster Risk Reduction”, in collaboration with the National Institute of Disaster Management that works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
In his inaugural address, the chief guest, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, Vice Chancellor discussed the health safety issue of infrastructure in the country. He said the role of civil engineers needs to be aligned with other related disciplines so as to bridge the gap between construction and the geospatial technology to make the buildings sustainable for longer times.
He mentioned the building stocks on AMU campus, some of which have outlived their designed life, and said there is an urgent need to assess the safety of these buildings. He thanked NIDM for the financial support to AMU and hoped the STTP will help create a meaningful interaction among experts, including the engineers belonging to the university and PWD.
Prof. Chandan Ghosh, Convener from NIDM, introduced the theme of the programme and briefly mentioned the NIDM activities. He discussed the infrastructure rating system being followed in USA since 1988, where the role of civil engineering experts is held of immense value.
He said that the health assessment of built up facilities in case of a pre and post disaster event, needs to be taken up with utmost priority, as there remains procedural gaps and lacunae in the civil engineering projects even today. He stressed the need for adopting digital construction technology using AI enabled designs and construction supervision portal.
Engineer Manish Bharti from Cortex Solution, New Delhi talked about the diagnosis of structures using various tools and repair-cum-retrofitting techniques, including the cost required. He elaborated on the site specific case studies that are required by the civil engineers.
Earlier, Prof. I.H. Farooqui, Chairman of the department, welcomed the guests and discussed the objectives of the programme.
Prof. M. Altamush Siddiqui, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Prof. M.M. Sufyan Beg, Principal, ZHCET were the guests of honour.
