Siberian Federal University: Siberian Federal University summes up the results of the All-Russian Science Festival NAUKA 0+

On December 3 and 4, 2021, the NAUKA 0+ all-Russian science festival was held at Siberian Federal University. This festival is one of the largest projects in the field of popularizing science in Russia, as well as a key event included in the plan for the Year of Science and Technology.

The organizers of the festival were the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Government of Krasnoyarsk Territory, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences and Siberian Federal University. The general partner of the central regional site of the All-Russian Science Festival in Krasnoyarsk is En+ Group.

During the previous several months the festival took place in several Russian cities: Sochi, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, and Samara and hosted over 20 million people. The results of the scientific marathon were summed up at Siberian Federal University as Krasnoyarsk Territory has been the central regional platform of NAUKA 0+ since 2015.

The Festival events were held in a hybrid format. The main online platform was the official website, and the organizers did their best to make the online events as exciting as possible. The festival was opened with a video greeting – eight choirs from universities, colleges and schools of the city sang Gaudeamus , the student anthem, and “I am making a step” by The Hatters.

According to the organizers, almost 75% of the visitors to the science festival are young people, in particular schoolchildren. The vocational guidance program #днибезтруникетов was targeted to that audience. Schoolchildren from Krasnoyarsk, Achinsk, Zheleznogorsk, Sayanogorsk and other cities of Krasnoyarsk Territory visited the laboratories and classrooms at SibFU. For them, scientists from the School of Physics and Radioelectronics, the Polytechnic School, the School of Ecology and Geography, the School of Non-Ferrous Metals and Materials Science, the School of Mining, Geology and Geotechnology, together with the students, conducted a series of educational lectures and master classes on physics, electronics, nanoelectronics, metallurgy, technology materials, applied geology, mining, geography, biotesting, nanoparticles, forest ecology, ground transport and technological complexes and facilities and other areas. The participants also enjoyed an extensive program of educational films and experiments from universities and scientific organizations of Krasnoyarsk Territory posted on the event website.

Lomonosov Moscow State University, a traditional partner the event, delivered lectures by Nobel laureates and leading scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences in various fields of science, and organized Hypermuseum – a virtual project where you can get acquainted with the operation of a thermonuclear reactor, the structure of the human heart, the behavior of crystal lattices of materials under tremendous pressure, and also find out what the Paleolithic caves looked like.

Another online project of the festival was a virtual laboratory. Visitors, being in the same virtual space with other users, including representatives of science, could communicate and jointly participate in solving various scientific problems. For example, to carry out joint laboratory work in nuclear physics, to conduct an experiment with gas diffusion, to try their hand in diagnostics, to independently compare the force of gravity on the Moon, Earth and Mars, to find and study ancient rock paintings in the Kapova Cave (Shulgan-Tash), create a gravitational wave and more. People could join from everywhere, even via their PC.

The key event of the Siberian final of NAUKA 0+ was the SCIENTIST & ROBOT: ROBOT SCIENTIST experiment show, where they invited the most active participants of the vocational guidance program, and conducted a series of experiments in chemistry and power engineering during a half-hour collaboration between the scientist and the robotic arms.

A bright finale to the scientific festival was a laser show which the organizers staged directly on the street near SibFU’s scientific library. The installation was created using light, laser and projection equipment and lasted 3 hours. The laser show was dedicated to the Year of Science and Technology and exhibited the themes of each month (genetics, energy efficiency and others) and technological progress in these areas.

Another special event of the regional program was the project #Почитайнауку 2.0 (read science 2.0). the Performers of the show were directors of the schools of Siberian Federal University who read out “Maybe: A Story About the Endless Potential in All of Us” by Kobi Yamada.

SibFU Rector Maksim Rumiantsev: “Popularization of science and scientific knowledge, the formation of the prestige of the profession of a scientist is one of the important areas of activity of Siberian Federal University. NAUKA 0+ makes it possible to implement this in full and for different people, therefore, for a number of years, SibFU has been deliberately among the organizers of the event in Krasnoyarsk Territory.

The general partner of the central regional site of NAUKA 0+ in Krasnoyarsk is En+ Group, a leading vertically integrated producer of aluminum and renewable electricity. The main mission of the festival is to support the interest of young people in engineering; the development of education in the regions is one of the main tasks of the social policy of En+ Group, the development vector of which was determined by its founder Oleg Deripaska. At the interactive stand of En+ group, the festival participants saw interesting laboratories for biofabrication, cloud technologies, nonlinear optical mycoroscopy and laser physics as well as could try scientific instruments, listen to explanations of young scientists, and, which was the most exciting thing, to independently complete different quests.

Natalia Firyulina, Chairwoman of the Krasnoyarsk City Council of Deputies: “NAUKA 0+ has long become a home event in Krasnoyarsk. It is not the first time that our city has become the closing platform for the marathon of popular science events and invariably arouses the interest of the citizen. Siberia has always been a place where scientific discoveries really changed life for the better. Krasnoyarsk is an industrial metropolis that is actively developing thanks to scientists and engineers. We are proud of the people of Krasnoyarsk, our contemporaries, known all over the world, who are engaged in fundamental science and popularize it. I really hope that every year, thanks to the festival, the number of dreamers and inventors among Krasnoyarsk schoolchildren will grow!”
