Siberian Federal University: The Russian Science Foundation Support the Russian-Chinese Team with SibFU scientists
On November 10, 2022, the results of the second joint competition of the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in support of international Russian-Chinese research teams were summed up. Models of Xylogenesis: From Cell to Forest Stand in Eurasia International project is among the winners. The head of the Russian scientific team is academician Eugene Vaganov, SibFU scientific advisor.
This project is focused on the development of adequate models of xylogenesis (wood formation) and predicting the response of the xylogenesis process to physical environmental factors (for example, climatic, hydrological ones, etc.). In addition, the scientists expect to develop practical recommendations for xylogenesis management technology based on an ensemble of models developed within the framework of the project.
“We are proud that the Russian and Chinese experts recognized our project as worthy and expressed their willingness to support its development. The aim of the project is to build special models describing the mechanisms of wood formation based on experimental observations and detailed measurements of the wood formation process. The Vaganov-Shashkin simulation model (VS-model), developed with the participation of academician Eugene Vaganov, SibFU scientific advisor, is going to be involved. We will conduct research on the basis of the existing monitoring network of dendroclimatic stations of the research team in Southern Siberia (Khakass-Minusinsk Basin and Western Sayan) and Northwestern China (Donga, Helan, Hasi ranges; northeast of the Tibetan Plateau),” said Vladimir Shishov, one of the authors of the project, director of School of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology.
More than 800 applications were submitted for the competition in 2022. 67 international projects have passed bilateral international expertise and were awarded the highest mutual evaluation. The amount of the RSF grant will be from 4 to 7 million roubles annually, and the three-year research projects are planned for implementation in 2023-2025.
National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) is the largest foundation that finances fundamental research in China. NSFC provided 44,504 new grants to more than 1,500 organizations for individual scientific research and groups of researchers in 2018.
