Sikkim government declares 20 August as gazetted holiday in the state as “Nepali Bhasa Manyata Diwas”. The day marks recognition of Nepali as one of the languages in 8th schedule of Indian Constitution.The language is the lingua franca in Sikkim and Darjeeling hill regions.
