Smart India Hackathon 2023 Grand Finale: Unleashing Innovation and Problem-Solving at Scale

  New Delhi – The Ministry of Education’s Innovative Cell (MIC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) are set to host the world’s largest hackathon, the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2023 Grand Finale. Over 12,000 participants from across 48 nodal centers in India will converge from December 19 to December 23 for this groundbreaking event.

SIH, an annual initiative, is recognized globally as the most extensive open innovation model, providing students with a platform to tackle real-world challenges faced by government bodies, ministries, industries, and organizations. The event has been instrumental in fostering a culture of product innovation and problem-solving among students since its inception in 2017.

This year’s SIH has seen unprecedented growth, with over 50,000 ideas submitted by 44,000 teams, marking a sevenfold increase from the first edition. The grand finale will see the participation of over 12,000 students and 2,500 mentors across 48 nodal centers, showcasing the growing popularity and impact of the hackathon.

AICTE Chairman Prof T G Sitharam highlighted key aspects of this year’s hackathon, including the introduction of the Smart India Hackathon – Junior in 2022 for school students, and the reception of 231 problem statements from 51 departments of 25 Ministries. The problem statements encompass a wide array of challenges, such as Drone-based surveillance systems for port areas, Text-to-videon conversion of PIB Press Releases using AI/ML for various regional languages, and the use of digital technology to calculate water footprints.

The SIH 2023 grand finale will comprise two editions: the SIH Software edition on December 19-20, 2023, and the SIH Hardware edition from December 19-23, 2023. The total prize pool for the hackathon is over Rs 2 crore, with each winning team receiving a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh per problem statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to engage with student participants on the evening of December 19, continuing the tradition of interacting with the brightest minds driving innovation in the country.
