SPbPU: Polytechnic University has signed the St. Petersburg Carbon Declaration
Leading experts signed the Saint Petersburg Carbon Declarations on the creation in the Northern Capital of the scientific and experimental innovation platform and the formation of the international community of scientific and technical experts on carbonic subjects. The ceremony took place in the Saint Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the framework of the international round table «Role of rational waste management in building a low-carbon closed-loop economy». Professor Dmitry ARSENIEV, Vice-Rector for International Affairs, signed the Declaration on behalf of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.
The problems of the climate agenda are being discussed today at the highest state level. As Russian President V.V. PUTIN pointed out, Russia should achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Most EU and world countries have set this task for themselves within approximately the same time frame. At the international round table at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Russian and foreign speakers made presentations on various aspects of building a low-carbon economy, issues of generation and turnover of carbon credits, rational use of resources, ecology, and environmental protection.
The round table on behalf of SPbPU was attended by Natalia POLITAEVA, Professor at the Higher School of Hydraulic and Energy Engineering, and Alexander CHUSOV, Associate Professor at Higher School of Hydraulic and Energy Engineering, who are leading experts on «carbon» investments in energy use of landfills and energy use of methane emissions from landfills to reduce greenhouse emissions. Polytechnic University has developed a methodology to assess the geo-environmental risk of atmospheric pollution from landfill decomposition and studied the issues of landfill reclamation. In addition, SPbPU created and registered a unique scientific installation «Laboratory Complex for Research of Processes of Obtaining and Conversion of Biogases from Organic Waste.»

The president of our country has set a goal to decarbonize the economy in the next decades. This is really a global trend, which includes many fundamental and applied problems in different scientific fields. Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University does have a lot of experience in carbon science. For many years, SPbPU scientific groups have worked in partnership with European universities and research centers on major international environmental projects: EU Framework Programmes with TU Hamburg-Harburg, international grants from the Russian Science Foundation, projects of cross-border cooperation programs.
