SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is a global ranking of scientific institutions published by Scimago Laboratories in partnership with Elsevier, the world’s largest scientific publisher.
The rankings are based on three groups of indicators. The first group of indicators measures social impact. The social ranking is based on the measurement of publication altmetrics, as well as the number of pages on the institution’s website and the number of back links and mentions from social networks. This indicator places SPbPU at 207th place.
The second group of indicators evaluates research work. These are indicators of publication activity, citation and quality of articles, accessibility of research and others. Polytechnic ranked 272nd in the world for this indicator.
The third group of indicators evaluates the innovative activity of organizations. The innovation ranking is calculated on the basis of the number of patent applications of the institution and citations of its patents. Here Polytechnic University ranks 508th.
This year’s ranking includes 102 Russian universities; a total of more than 7,500 institutions from all over the world and from all sectors of the economy were evaluated.
The SCImago Institutions Rankings are considered to be one of the most objective rankings, as the experts evaluate universities and scientific organizations not on the basis of their applications, but on the basis of information from international databases over the past five years. A university is automatically included in the ranking if it has at least 100 articles in Scopus over the past year, and its publication activity is also evaluated using this database. PATSTAT is used for patent information, Google, Ahrefs, Mendeley, and PlumX metrics for social indicators.
