Stevens Institute of Technology: Stevens Systems Engineering Rises to No. 7, Engineering Management Ranked No. 9 in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

In recognition of the School of Systems and Enterprises’ (SSE) pursuit to provide world-class systems education and groundbreaking research, two graduate programs ranked top ten nationwide by the U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Online Rankings for 2022. SSE’s Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Systems Engineering advanced one position, rising from No. 8 to No. 7 for online industrial engineering programs. New to the 2022 report, SSE’s master’s in engineering management program ranked No. 9 nationwide for engineering management. Both programs are ranked No. 1 in New Jersey.

“My colleagues and I at SSE are proud to see the Engineering Management program receiving national recognition and affirmation from our peers,” said Dr. Carlo Lipizzi, associate professor and program director for engineering management. “Our program’s emphasis on real-world applications and preparing students to effectively manage complexity is relevant now more than ever, and we hope to sustain this trend of excellence in creating leaders across industries.”

Learning and Innovating Online
Following the new strategic plan, Planning for Success, Strategic Plan 2018-2023, SSE bolstered all aspects of education, including a reinvigorated interdisciplinary curriculum that provides graduate learners with robust online programs to educate the technical leaders of tomorrow in a digital environment. Equipped for the remote learning necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic, SSE continues to prepare students to tackle global challenges in research and development, policy and strategy, and entrepreneurial innovation.

The U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Online Rankings assess offerings whose core requirements are predominantly accessible to distance learners. Adapting to current circumstances, engineering management students continued to further their career aspirations via SSE’s online graduate programs.

“The flexibility of online learning allowed me to work full-time and get my masters at the same time, and my professors were able to think outside of the stereotypical classroom to provide my peers and myself with a quality, well-rounded education that was offered completely online,” said Matthew Menture M.Eng. ’21, systems engineer at General Dynamics and a graduate of the engineering management program. “My employer saw the potential of my advanced education, and I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in today without my master’s degree. The skills I learned and experiences I gained from Stevens in program management, system modeling, and engineering economics fit perfectly with an opportunity to become a manager and product owner at General Dynamics. The online engineering management program at Stevens has opened doors for me to accelerate my career faster than I ever could’ve imagined.”

Consistent Commendations for SSE
Complimenting the success of the engineering management program, SSE’s M.Eng. in systems engineering extends its multiyear upward trajectory in rank, rising from No. 21 in 2020 to No. 7 in 2022.

“The consistent increase of ranking and peer recognition experienced by systems engineering at SSE highlights the program’s ascent as a renowned leader in research and practice,” said Dr. Mo Mansouri, associate professor and program director for systems engineering. “We are incredibly proud to be top 10 in the nation, and we are just as proud of our graduates who lead the way in constantly evolving industries.”

The importance of continuing to build robust and innovative online programs cannot be overstated, particularly as online enrollment increases. The number of students enrolled in online master’s programs university-wide in Fall 2021 was 54% higher than that of Fall 2020, and SSE in particular increased by 45%.

SSE’s elevated rankings in online graduate programs constitute part of the many programs at Stevens Institute of Technology recognized by the 2022 U.S. News & World Report College Rankings. As Stevens maintains its mission to lead innovative education across disciplines and industries, SSE looks to extend its contribution by providing elite, career-focused graduate programming.
