Stevens Institute of Technology: Students and Faculty Represent SSE at Modern Systems 2022

Showcasing the School of Systems & Enterprise’s (SSE) emphasis on collaborative research as a crux of engineering education, three community members represented the School on an international stage at the International Conference of Modern Systems Engineering Solutions in Nice, Saint-Laurent-du-Var, France.

In response to a paradigm shift in systems engineering approaches caused by advances in mobility, processing power and computation approaches, Modern Systems 2022 invited researchers to explore how systems must evolve to meet increased expectations

Professor Mo Mansouri was selected as a member of the conference’s steering committee, serving as a leader in systems thinking and design. Alongside Mansouri, two SSE students virtually presented research papers produced while undertaking the systems engineering doctoral program.

“The opportunity to conduct impactful research and to present your work to peers at conferences is one of the many factors that make an SSE education unique and valuable,” said Mansouri. “Our students don’t just come here to learn. They come here to tackle societal issues and to share their advancements in systems thinking with the world.”

Yefeng Liang, a graduate of the computer science master’s program and current systems engineering doctoral candidate, presented “A Systematic Mapping of Natural Gas Transportation Systems’ Reliability and Risks Analysis.” With Mansouri as his advisor and collaborator, Liang developed a comprehensive analysis on transnational natural gas transportation that examined its process, reliance, stakeholders, reliability and operation relationship.

Geoffrey Lichtenheim, Senior Manager of Solution Engineering at VMware and doctoral student at SSE, presented “Preventing E-Government Tragedy of the Clouds Using System Thinking Methods” that proposed the use of system thinking methods in E-Government systems to drive greater efficiencies in the deployment of public cloud services.
