Sydney students chosen for prestigious scholarship cohort
With 150 scholars, including five University of Sydney students, the 2023 New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship is the largest cohort of scholars to travel to the Indo-Pacific.
The prestigious NCP scholarship has selected five University of Sydney students across law, arts and commerce to live, study and intern in the Indo-Pacific region.
In 2023, the NCP scholars will travel to 24 locations across the region to grow their global relationships and extend their learning beyond the classroom.
Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott AO celebrated the opportunities afforded to NCP scholars.
“Our invaluable relationship with the Asia-Pacific region is enhanced through the New Colombo Plan scholarship. The Sydney students embarking on this journey will experience new challenges, develop intercultural leadership skills, and graduate with a global perspective,” said Professor Scott.
“The attributes these students will gain speak to the University of Sydney’s values, which seek to enhance the university experience and foster strong global relationships. I wish our students all the best on their journey.”
NCP scholarship recipient Ibrahim Taha is studying a Bachelor of Laws and interested in Singapore’s intersection of law and political governance. “I am hoping to immerse myself in Asia and bring back to Australia a new perspective that sees Australia as an integral player in the region,” he said.
Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Studies student Alexandra Lyons, who is travelling to Jakarta, Indonesia, to study at Universitas Indonesia, is keen to take advantage of the interpersonal relationships she will make in the local community.
“I am most looking forward to putting my knowledge into practice by studying and interning in Indonesia. I am keen to interact with the local context and deepen my intercultural capability.”
The Sydney students embarking on this journey will experience new challenges, develop intercultural leadership skills, and graduate with a global perspective.
The University of Sydney New Colombo Plan 2023 scholarship recipients are:
Joshua Ellis – Bachelor of Laws
Joshua will study at Peking University in China with a focus on the Chinese legal system, politics and history and an interest in bridging social and language gaps with Australia.
Carol Lin – Bachelor of Arts (Economics) and Bachelor of Laws
Carol will study at the University of Hong Kong with an interest in the laws and jurisprudence of East Asia and interning in locations across China and Japan.
Alexandra Lyons – Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies
Alexandra will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia and study at Universitas Indonesia with interest in the ethnic roots of Indonesian culture and how these dynamics impact modern society.
Ricky Rangra – Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Advanced Studies
Ricky will travel to Singapore and study at the National University of Singapore, focusing on finance and banking, including cultural immersion and learning the local language.
Ibrahim Taha – Bachelor of Laws
Ibrahim will study at the National University of Singapore and is interested in the intersection of law and political governance system in Singaporean society and learning for Australia.
Global experience and student mobility are a part of the University of Sydney’s undergraduate experience. Students can add an international dimension to their degree through programs like semester exchange, short-term programs, global internships and fieldwork, with several scholarships available to support their studies.
