Technical University of Munich launches new collaborative format in Excellence Strategy

In order to facilitate the industry sector’s access to science and to leverage synergy potentials more strategically, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has launched a new collaborative format in the context of its Excellence Strategy. The first partner in the TUM Industry Engagement Program (IEP) is the German software company SAP.

The objective of the IEP is to identify common interests shared by TUM researchers and companies, to explore areas of innovation together and to promote talented individuals.

Trust-based partnership with SAP
TUM has maintained a close relationship with SAP for many years. As a TUM Partner of Excellence, SAP is currently erecting a modern research building on the TUM Garching campus, the SAP Labs Campus.

Both partners now plan to further expand this relationship in the IEP. This will include joint research projects, lecture series, Meet-the-Students events and a joint SAP&TUM Collaboration Day. The scientific contact on the TUM side is Prof. Florian Matthes, who conducts research in Business Information Systems and Software Engineering.

Dr. Rüdiger Eichin, Head of Industry-University Collaboration at SAP Labs Munich comments: “In addition to applied research, we place a high priority on mutual knowledge exchange and co-innovation with customers and partners. The TUM IEP provides the necessary framework, enabling joint work on research-driven innovations. Our topics range from sustainable corporate management and resilient supply networks all the way to the challenges of the Digital Transformation. The SAP@TUM Collaboration Lab will let us work together to make an important contribution both to the company and to society.”

TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann says: “Our IEP is creating a new fast track for the transfer of new scientific findings to economically viable innovations. A working relationship on equal terms with industry partners and based on trust is decisive for the success of this transfer. SAP is a fantastic example of this.”

The Industry Engagement Program
The IEP is also open to additional partners from the industry sector. It creates an attractive opportunity for companies of all sizes interested in a strategic partnership with TUM and in taking partnership with TUM to a new level of quality.
