Tenova technology insights at METEC 2019: a special focus on Sustainability and Industry 4.0

Castellanza: Fossil-free steel production through hydrogen, large-scale metal powder production for Additive Manufacturing, optimization of the process through Digital Technology: Tenova’s booth at METEC 2019 intends to be a window onto a green and more efficient way of producing metals. A unique opportunity for a comprehensive insight into the newest and most advanced metal making technologies.

“Our motto for this edition is “The smart way to metals”, which refers to the path that Tenova has been tracing over the last years towards a more sustainable and digitalized steel production. This approach is underpinned by a consistent strategy aimed at changing the business model along the entire value chain. An approach we want to put forward and continue to develop in tight collaboration with our clients, through tailored-made solutions”, said Roberto Pancaldi, Tenova Metals CEO.

Tenova – a company of the Techint Group leader in innovative solutions for the metals and mining industries – will be at METEC 2019, the international trade fair for metallurgy and steel production, held in Düsseldorf (June 25-29), with a 300 m2 booth (A21, Hall 4) dedicated to its most innovative and sustainable technologies.

Among the different solutions presented at the fair, our visitors and guests will find two groundbreaking pieces of equipment on display: the Pomini Digital Texturing™ (PDT™) – a unique texturing machine that can be discovered through augmented reality – and the Self Regenerative Burner (TRGS) – a smart burner able to optimize the combustion process through the application of digital technology.

A portion of our booth will be dedicated to the “Tenova Arena”, where our experts will present Tenova core technologies and the most cutting-edge solutions – including predictive maintenance, remote assistance and artificial intelligence – during the whole duration of the exhibition, from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. (*).

Tenova booth will also be a point of interest of ecoMetalsTrails, an initiative launched by Messe Düsseldorf with the aim to promote sustainability and support exhibiting companies that make a contribution to the environment and present their long-term commitment at the fair. Tenova decided to lay the focus on two technologies that represent a real progress in the development of sustainable steelmaking.

The first one consists in a unique technology aimed at replacing carbon partially or totally with hydrogen as reducing agent of the Direct Reduction (DR) process. This is already applied to two key projects: SALCOS® (SAlzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking), a revolutionary concept for a significantly CO2-reduced steel production, created with Salzgitter AG; and HYBRIT®, an initiative for fossil-free steelmaking that was established in 2016 by Hybrit Development AB, a Swedish joint venture between SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall.

In addition, by the process in the latest generation of the Twin-Chamber Melting Furnace, TCF® Tenova LOI Thermprocess offers process technology for efficient use of the energy content of the pyrolysis gas, which results from the contaminants adhering to the scrap. The new processes and control algorithms assure resource conservation by offering a further reduction of the metal oxidation, i.e. metal loss, and an improvement regarding metal yield. The fully automatic operation guarantees the constantly good result for production and reduction of emissions.

Tenova will also take part with several papers in the accompanying conference European Steel Technology and Application Days (ESTAD), held at the Congress Centrum Düsseldorf (CCD), and in Thermoprocess Symposium (D74, hall 9).
