Monash University has been named Australia’s top research institution by The Australian in its annual list of the country’s top researchers and research universities.

Of the 250 fields of academic endeavour identified by the publication in its 2023 list, a Monash researcher was in first place in 31 of the fields, and Monash as a whole was the top research institution in 51 fields.

Many of the top researchers were in health and medical sciences, with the University leading in 24 fields of research, while it also led in nine fields for the business, economics and management discipline.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President Professor Rebekah Brown said: “Monash is home to many outstanding researchers across a wide range of fields and disciplines, working with our partners to solve global problems and create new technologies and make discoveries for the betterment of people and the planet. This is a fantastic and well deserved recognition of the contribution our researchers continue to make.”

This is the fifth year The Australian has compiled a list of the top 250 researchers and research institutions, using data based on the number of citations researchers have received for their publications over the past five years in top academic journals.

The list is accompanied by the publication’s Research Magazine 2023, which features Monash academics who are leaders in their fields.
