‘The Dancer’s Worship’- An Odissi Dance Production based on Rabindranath Tagore’s masterpiece Natir Puja
Bangalore : For the first time in Bengaluru, Rabindranath Tagore’s masterpiece, ‘Natir Puja,’ comes alive in the form of an Odissi Dance Drama. Titled ‘The Dancer’s Worship’, well known Odissi dancer Sharmila Mukerjee and her ensemble Sanjali will showcase their brand new production on 30th July 2023 at Bangalore International Centre, Domlur, at 6.30PM. Immerse yourself in this unique fusion of dance and storytelling, as Sharmila Mukerjee takes center stage to bring forth the essence of ‘Natir Puja’.
Known for her choice of fresh and unconventional themes, Sharmila’s performances go beyond the traditional repertoire. Her love for the offbeat is evident in all her productions that have portrayed distinctive themes through the threads of Odissi. Sharmila’s upcoming production ‘The Dancer’s Worship’ is yet another example of a narrative that goes past the convention.
Sharmila’s interpretation of Tagore’s ‘Natir Puja’ revolves around Srimati, the story of a ‘Rajnartaki’/ a court dancer. In Natir Puja (Devotion of the Court-Dancer), the focal point is the untainted spirit of a humble dancer, who perceives herself as undeserving even to be present in the presence of Buddha’s teachings. However, her profound modesty portrays a fundamental principle of Buddhism. The devout followers of Buddha recognize her unwavering dedication and implore her to conduct the sacred ceremonies as a priestess before Buddha’s altar. As a result, her devotion surpasses the offerings made by the royal princesses, causing some of them to feel offended. The story of Srimati touches upon intricate themes of injustice, devotion, and spiritual freedom.
Speaking about the production, Sharmila Mukerjee says, “The Dancer’s Worship is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of genuine devotion. The themes of devotion, sacrifice, and spirituality are sure to ignite a sense of introspection among the audience. Natir Puja’s story resonates deeply with me and I am thrilled to bring Rabindranath Tagore’s masterpiece to the audiences in Bengaluru”
