Chennai: Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, the incumbent Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has been reappointed to serve a second term of five years, as the head of the prestigious Institute. An alumnus of IIT Madras and University of California, Santa Barbara, Prof. Ramamurthi joined the Institute as a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering Department in the year 1986 and served at various key positions, including that of Dean (Planning), before taking over as the Director of the Institute for the first time in September 2011.
The ‘IIT Madras Strategic Plan 2020’ (www.iitm.ac.in/strategicplan2020), devised and adopted by the Director during the initial part of his tenure, has chalked out quantified targets for all key pillars of the Institute. These include a flexible curriculum suited to the aspirations of today’s youth, high quality faculty, thriving research environment with a critical mass of research scholars and laboratories with the latest equipment, a strong industry-academia connect, epitomized by the country’s first university-based Research Park, an effervescent start-up ecosystem with over a hundred companies incubated, a rapidly expanding programme of collaborations and student exchanges with leading international institutions and an enviable placement record. All these factors have not just contributed to the all-round growth of the Institute but enabled it to emerge as the number one engineering institute in the country, as per the NIRF Rankings 2016 (www.nirfindia.org/Ranking).
Speaking about his future plans, Prof. Ramamurthi said, “In addition to meeting or exceeding our Strategic Plan targets, we will strive to build an Institute that is the go-to place for students and faculty members who wish to work together to address national and global technological challenges, an Institute whose badge every alumnus and staff member is proud to wear.
