The presence of startups from the United Kingdom, Germany, the US and the Region of Latin America grows among the 100 finalists of the Startup Competition 2024
- South Summit’s Startup Competition reaffirms its globality, with significant increases in startups from across Europe, mainly from the United Kingdom and Germany, contributing a total of 17 projects, while the U.S. and Latin America together rise to be represented by another 14 startups.
- The committee in charge of selecting the finalist startups has assessed criteria such as the degree of innovation, business scalability, growth potential, attractiveness to investors and the capabilities the team behind the project.
- By sectors, the focus of the motto “Human by Design” of South Summit 2024 stands out in the new verticals: Trust Tech & Data will encompass the most disruptive theme on the ethical of data, and Digital Culture, will explore the new digital spaces of human interaction.

Madrid, 29th April 2024. South Summit Startup Competition Madrid, 2024, co-organized by IE University, is growing globally. The hundred startups that have entered the final phase of the competition have been chosen through a rigorous selection process from more than 4,700 applications from all over the world, a figure that reflects the global profile of the competition. In fact, 81% of the applications come from outside Spain.
In addition, among the 100 finalists, the growth of startups from all over Europe stands out, with a significant presence from the United Kingdom and Germany, as well as the increase presence of startups from the US and Latin American region among the finalists.
Specifically, the United Kingdom contributes 9 startups compared to 6 from the previous year, while 8 startups come from Germany (7 last year), 5 from Italy and Switzerland and 3 from Sweden. Meanwhile, 7 startups will come to Madrid from the United States to present their project, a similar number will be coming from Latin America. Spain continues to contribute a significant percentage to the competition (48 startups), with Madrid, Barcelona and the Region of Valencia as outstanding areas.
The finalists have been selected by a committee of renowned investors and innovation experts, based on criteria such as their level of innovation, scalability, internal growth potential, ability to attract investment and their human team.
What’s New in Content Tracks
Among the novelties of this thirteenth edition of South Summit Madrid, the new content tracks tailored to the event’s motto, ‘HUMAN by design’, also stand out. These new tracks are: Future of Work and Talent, focused on Human Resources and talent retention in industries such as Professional Training, Education and Workforce Solutions; Trust Tech & Data, oriented toward technologies that are committed to providing trust to users in industries such as Data Analytics, Compliance, Cybersecurity, Security and Defense, Risk Detection and Legal, and Digital Culture, which can be defined as the set of technologies that shape the way people work and interact in a digital environment. These three new verticals join the historical tracks of: Industry 5.0, Enterprise, Mobility & Smart Cities, Fintech & Insuretech, Health, Consumer and Climate Tech.

The finalist startups will have the opportunity to pitch to the most relevant leaders and player in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, including corporations and investment funds, as well as connect with other startups and learn first-hand about the latest trends in the world of innovation.
Human By Design
#SouthSummit24 will have the institutional support of the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, the Community of Madrid and the Madrid City Council, as well as Mutua Madrileña, Google for Startups, BBVA Spark, Endesa, Wayra – Telefónica Innovation and Banco Sabadell’s BStartup.
Under the name ‘HUMAN By design’, the event will answer the questions posed by the new technological era: to what extent new technologies condition the definition of being human and how innovations can help improve the quality of life of humanity, always with the person at the centre of the equation and technology serving them.
South Summit Madrid 2024 will be attended by more than 200 speakers, some twenty unicorns, such as BlaBlaCar, Clikalia, Globant or SandboxAQ, as well as international speakers such as: Marc Randolph, co-founder and first CEO of Netflix; Steven Bartlett, creator of Europe’s most listened to podcast, and Jeff Hoffman, co-founder of Booking.
