The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Tar Heels move in

Campus is buzzing once again as our newest Tar Heels begin to make Carolina home and move into the residence halls this week. The two-day move in is the start of the University’s annual Week of Welcome and the signal of a new year beginning in Chapel Hill.

With the help of their families and fellow students, the Class of 2025 began moving into the residence halls on Aug. 12. New student move in continued on Aug. 13 and returning students will continue arriving through the weekend and early next week, with classes beginning Aug. 18.

Carolina’s newest group of Tar Heels includes 4,650 first-year students and 925 transfer students.
The incoming group of students represents 96 of North Carolina’s 100 counties, 46 states and 98 countries. Nearly 20% are the first in their families to go to college.

Between hauling boxes and saying goodbye to proud parents, the undergraduates met their roommates, decorated their rooms and prepared to start an exciting new chapter of their lives.

Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz joined the move in effort on Aug. 12, helping our newest Tar Heels get settled into their on-campus homes. Guskiewicz was joined by Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Amy Johnson and Student Body President Lamar Richards in welcoming the students at the residence halls.

After some hugs and photos, parents wished their students good luck and sent them on their way to begin their Carolina experience.

On Sunday, first-year students, sophomores and transfer students will come together in Kenan Stadium to celebrate the beginning of their on-campus experience at New Student Convocation. The same night, the rest of the campus community will join in on the festivities at the annual FallFest. The Week of Welcome will continue through the first week of classes, with events held throughout campus.
