Theatre fiesta: PRAGJYOTISH Kicks off in Guwahati
Guwahati: The theatre festivity of Pragjyotish have begun in Guwahati. The theatre festival by National school of Drama is being organized in collaboration with Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Panjabari. The team is all set to enthral with assortment of playsand other cultural event for audience of Guwahati.
The inaugural function for Pragjyotish kick started at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Panjabari with an ambience performance. Dignitaries present on the occasion included Chief Guest Shri. Dulal Roy, eminent theatre artist, Guest of Honour Mr. Pranjal Saikia renowned actor and Special Guest Shri. Sudarshan Thakur. The function was presided over by Ms. Hema Singh, Associate Professor, National School of Drama.
Presiding over the function Ms. Hema Singh, welcomed the guest at the inauguration and appreciated all the participants from the theatre fraternity who came all across. Also, she specially expressed her gratitude for the dignitaries present at the event. After successfully completing 21st edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav by presenting the masterpieces from the world of theatre.The idea behind PRAGJYOTISH is to reach out to a much wider set of audiences with works fromregional theatre. We aim to highlight the position of theatre and plays and endorse theculture of appreciating various forms of performing arts.
Chief Guest Shri. Dulal Roy, present at the event said “National School of Drama has given a platform to many theatre enthusiasts and recognised some of their best work. As an artform theatre has seen all the trends which come & go but it still growing and maintaining its legacy among the generations. Stages like PRAGJYOTISH are providing individuals from different regions with access to some uncommon dramatic experiences..”

Present at the event the Special Guest, Shri. Sudarshan Thakur said “National School of drama has given a platform to some of the best works of theatre and actors. Theatre as an art still attracts the audience. Theatre is a larger medium of expression that has survived the medium of many popular trends. Platforms like PRAGJYOTISH will provide people with access to some rare theatrical masterpieces.”
Dr. Arjun Deo Charan, Acting Chairman, NSD said “Theatre aims at uniting individuals and subsequently, we have spread the celebration to endorse theatre at a regional level with the goal to reach out increasing number of individuals. Pragjyotish will be an effective celebration drawing in a ton of crowd and we trust a comparative run for the current year as well.”
Enunciating about the festival, Shri Suresh Sharma, Director In-charge, National School of Drama (NSD), said, “The festival will provide focuses on providing an engaging audience experience. National School of Drama has been organizing the theatre fiesta in North east since so long, earlier it was known as ‘Purvotar Natya Samaroh’ but keeping in mind the ancient name of the North east region we have renamed the festival as PRAGJYOTISH.”
Besides the plays which will be staged every evening, in the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Panjabari campus will be abuzz with allied performances which will include traditional dance and folk performances.
PRAGJYOTISH, in total will be hosting 15 plays in 3 different cities for which National School of Drama has received the entries of 81 different plays out of which in 45 were is Assamese, 14 Manipuri, 10 Bengali, 3 Hindi, 3 Multilingual, 1 from Meghalya, 1 in Assamese + Hindi & 1 in Assamese + KachRajbandash.
