Three-day national conference on nuclear physics begins at AMU

Aligarh: The Department of Physics, Aligarh Muslim University today organised a three-day national conference on “Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Reactions” as a part of the centenary celebrations of the Aligarh Muslim University.

In his address, chief guest, Prof B K Nayak (Head, Nuclear Physics Division, BARC, Mumbai) said that AMU’s department of Physics has a strong tradition of carrying out research using pelletron accelerator facilities and the faculty members in this department have done outstanding work on incomplete fusion reactions.

Prof Nayak said it was high time to put efforts into bringing more researchers into the nuclear physics and create awareness in society regarding the importance of nuclear science and technology.

The guest of honour, Prof S K Singh, former Vice Chancellor, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Uttarakhand and former Dean, Faculty of Science, AMU highlighted the achievements of Department of Physics since 1912 and said that the department has produced several distinguished faculty members and nuclear physicists including Prof P S Gill, Prof H S Hans and Prof A N Mitra. He said that the tradition of quality research in this field continues with the establishment of neutron generator.

Prof Qazi Mazhar Ali, Dean, Faculty of Science congratulated the department for organizing the conference which will help the students develop interest in nuclear physics.

Earlier, Prof B P Singh, Chairman, Department of Physics welcomed the guests and narrated historical anecdotes of the department. Prof Isar Ahmad Rizvi, convenor of the conference, highlighted the details of the conference.

Dr Shakeb Ahmad proposed a vote of thanks.
