Three-day Training on ‘Disaster Management and its Mitigation’

Aligarh: Highly skilled experts are providing the faculty members and students with integrated disaster management expertise, prevention and preparedness in the three-day Short-Term Training Programme on ‘Disaster Management and its Mitigation’ that began on November 22, Tuesday at the Department of Civil Engineering, Z H College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The programme, organised under the collaboration of Department of Civil Engineering and National Institute of Disaster Management, Ministry of Home Affairs will conclude on November 24.

In the inaugural speech, the Chief Guest, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor discussed the role of civil engineers aligned with other experts in disaster mitigation and minimization of suffering of natural disasters.

The Vice Chancellor also stressed on prevention of man made disaster related nuclear power plants and flooding due to urbanisation.

He extended gratitude to the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) for the necessary support to organise the programme.

Prof Chandan Ghosh (Convener, NIDM) stressed the need for resilient building constructions in earthquake prone areas and a countrywide health assessment of built up facilities.

“Resiliency is a key component in green construction and design and when products are able to withstand greater challenges from the environment and weather events, this translates to less rebuilding and, in turn, less waste and less energy consumption”, he said.

Prof Chandan later spoke on the current trends of early earthquake warning with the help of smart devices and presented a case study of base isolated buildings in NOIDA, which provide earthquake safety at lower costs compared to other earthquake resistant constructions.

Prof Suresh Bhalla (IIT- New Delhi) gave a presentation on ‘Smart Sensors’ for structural health monitoring and other on-site data acquisition systems.

He also discussed the use and application of Bamboo as structural materials in buildings.

The Guest of Honour, Prof M Altamush Siddiqui (Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology) called for inculcating a culture of preparedness among and training of all stakeholders in disaster management.

Prof M M Sufyan Beg (Principal, ZHCET) who also attended the programme as the Guest of Honour pressed the need for specific disaster response training courses and a unified, structured and uniform course module.

Prof Abdul Baqi (Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering) delivered the welcome address.

Prof Rehan A Khan (Organising Secretary) extended the vote of thanks and Dr Mohd Moin ul Haq conducted the programme.
