TIE Global gets new chairman, a first time ever from India
New Delhi : Mahavir Sharma, a Jaipur based Entrepreneur and Angel Investor has been unanimously chosen to lead TiE for the year 2020. Since 1992 TiE has been supporting entrepreneurs by offering education, mentorship, networking, incubation and funding opportunities. For the last 27 years TiE has never been led by a Charter member from India. This shift over the years not only shows how hard Indian chapters and members have been contributing to the global organization in its goals and mission but also the fact that the focus of startups and entrepreneurship has been shifting east.
The mission of TiE is to foster entrepreneurship globally through the 5 pillars of TiE: mentoring, networking, education, funding and incubation. Dedicated to the virtuous cycle of wealth creation and giving back to the community. TiE’s focus area is to generate enable the next generation of entrepreneurs.
TiE Global is the largest non-profit organization and has amazing networking effect. TiE connects the entire entrepreneurship ecosystem from early stage entrepreneurs, serial entrepreneurs, professionals at leading corporations, venture capital, angel investors, thought leaders among others. The organization emphasizes the spirit of giving in all aspects of their work.
• TiE Global is a nonprofit organization devoted to assisting entrepreneurs at all stages, from incubation, throughout the entrepreneurial lifecycle.
• Founded in 1992 in Silicon Valley.
• Today, TiE has 13,000 members, including over 2900 charter members in 61 chapters across 14 countries. (About to add 4 more chapters in 3 new countries in the next two months)
• There are over 2900 charter members in the TiE community across the globe and almost 1400 of them are from India. They are accomplished business leaders and entrepreneurs, who have a desire to serve as mentors and angels to startups.
• An ever-growing number of over 10,000 startups have benefitted by the TiE network via mentoring, networking, education, incubation and funding. The TiE Global Angels (TGA) launched in the US has already succeeded in its mission to invest in Idea/Early stage startups and about to be launched TiE India Angels (TIA) will do the same for India.
The Future road map as per the incoming Chair, Mahavir Sharma-
1) Strengthen the existing TiE initiatives we have created and help and empower and support the chapters to adopt these programs.
a) TiE Women program to strengthen the women entrepreneurship program. Already have created a corpus and now to empower them and invest in them.
b) TYE and TiE University program for school and college kids. We catch them young and run an international start-up competition both at school and college level across the chapters.
c) Chapter TiE Angels, TiE Global Angels (TGA) and TiE India Alliance (TIA) – access to early stage capital is integral to the success of startups. We probably are the world’s only non-profit and the largest angel group across the globe, investing across countries.
d) TiE Global Summit (TGS) – TGS in its 5th year is going to be held in Dubai in December 2020 in the midst of Expo 2020 and serving it as a gateway to Africa and EU. The location for TGS- 6 has also been decided as Hyderabad for the year 2021.
2) Global Expansion (Start new chapters) – Africa, Asia and EU are underserved communities that TiE can play an important role and we have had inquires thru our network and we are initiating dialogues in regard to the same. South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Mauritius, Kazakhstan and Dehradun in India are already in the pipeline.
3) Government engagement is the key to the success of TiE. With TiE having done so much in the past 27 years we have to ensure positive partnership with the policy makers, locally in all state governments and nationally in DC and Delhi. We have to play role in policy making in entrepreneurship and at angel investing level and helping create the right framework for startups to receive and we as angels to invest across countries and boundaries.
