Tobacco Cessation Centre inaugurated at JNMC
ALIGARH : Prof Veena Meheshwari, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) today inaugurated a Tobacco Cessation Centre (TCC) at the Old OPD Block of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, under the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0, initiated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in collaboration with the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Unveiling the plaque of the centre, Prof Maheshwari said that such centres have been established in all medical colleges in the country as announced by Shri J.P. Nadda, Minister of Health and Family Welfare during a programme held in New Delhi on September 24.
Prof. Maheshwari said that healthcare practitioners in medical institutions, being the first layer of contact with tobacco users suffering from various diseases, can play a pivotal role in offering tobacco cessation services.
She further said that by recognizing that tobacco cessation is most receptive during symptomatic phases of any disease, the establishment of TCC in medical colleges is likely to yield good results.
Prof. Saira Mehnaz, Nodal Officer, TCC and Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine hoped that the centre will facilitate training for medical graduates and help them achieve competence in practice of holistic medicine, encompassing promotional, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of common diseases.
Dr. Mohd. Yasir Zubair, Senior Resident, Department of Community Medicine and Dr, Mahbooba Khazir, Department of Radiotherapy helped in managing and facilitating the inaugural function.
