Tohoku University: Tohoku University Ranked Number One in Japan

Times Higher Education (THE) has released its annual list of top Japanese universities, and Tohoku University is ranked number one for the third year in a row.

The 16 metrics used to determine the rankings include resources, teaching and learning environment, international outlook of staff and students, research citation and influence, and industry income.

THE, which compiles performance data on top institutions around the world, also considers what it describes as “engagement measures,” such as student engagement, interaction between teachers and students, and how well employers view graduating students.

Tohoku University has consistently placed in the top three of THE’s Japan University lists since rankings began in 2017. It had previously scored well for its emphasis on global education, and for its high number of international faculty, students and research collaborations.

This year, with international exchange severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, the university received high marks instead for its student engagement and effective use of resources.
