Tree plantation to mark ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’

Aligarh : In a massive tree plantation drive to observe the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), saplings of various trees were planted across the breadth of university by faculty members and students.

In the Department of Land and Gardens led tree plantation drive; the Chief Guest, Prof M M Sufyan Beg (Principal, ZHCET) and the Guest of Honour, Prof Altamush Siddiqui (Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology) joined Prof Zaki Anwar Siddiqui (Member-in-Charge, Land and Gardens) and ZHCET faculty members to plant 100 royal palm saplings and other plants at the Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET) Road.

On the occasion, Prof Sufyan Beg remarked, “Since the impact of climate change is global and unprecedented in scale, only trees can improve our air quality by filtering harmful dust and pollutants”.

“Plants are responsible for much of the biomass present on the planet and without them the Earth will become a desert”, said Prof Altamush Siddiqui.

Prof Zaki Anwar Siddiqui emphasised: “Plants are the base of the trophic pyramid and all other organisms in the ecosystem directly or indirectly depend on them for food energy. Many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat”.

Similarly, faculty members, research scholars and students of the Department of Modern Indian Languages planted tree saplings in the department premises and nearby areas to observe the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

“It is heartening to see a large number of students and teachers coming forth to join university-wide tree plantation campaigns which can only be successful with wholehearted participations”, said Prof Mushtaq Ahmad Zargar (Chairman, Department of Modern Indian Languages).

Faculty members and students of the Department of Moalejat also joined the university-wide tree plantation drive to observe the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaigns.

“Saplings of various trees were planted across the department area and nearby places”, said Prof. Tabassum Latafat (Chairperson, Department of Moalejat).

She added, “An essay-writing contest for postgraduate students and interns on the topic, ‘Importance of Independence and our Responsibilities’ was also held to mark the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign”.
