Tribute Paid to late Professor Asadur Rahman
Aligarh : Professor Asadur Rahman, former faculty member of the Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) who later left for the United States of America, is no more. He was one of the most distinguished scholars and sympathizers of AMU in the USA, where he played a key role in establishing the AMU Alumni Association in North America.
Glowing tributes were paid to him during a condolence meeting held at the Department of English, AMU, where Prof Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Chairman of the Department read the condolence message, described his major accomplishments and highlighted his personal qualities that made him so popular among students and his colleagues.
“Prof Rahman was considered an excellent teacher and very good communicator. He joined the Department of English in 1951 during the Vice-Chancellorship of Dr. Zakir Husain, former President of India and left possibly in early 1971. He was very passionate about AMU. When he shifted to the US in the 70s he brought together the Alig fraternity and established an alumni association”, said Prof Asim Siddiqui.
“His values, selfless spirit and enthusiastic demeanour will continue to enlighten the lives of many of his students and fellow Aligs”, he added.
He offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul.
Prof Asadur Rahman studied at Delhi’s famous St. Stephen’s College, and obtained a Master’s degree in English Literature from Cambridge University.
His late wife Mrs Shayesta Rahman also taught at AMU’s Women’s College and his father Mr. Noor ur Rahman worked closely with Dr. Zakir Husain at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Mr. Noor ur Rahman also worked as Registrar, Jamia Urdu, Aligarh for a few years.
The condolence meeting concluded by observing two minutes of silence to pray for peace to the departed soul.
Teachers, students and non-teaching staff of the Department attended the condolence meeting in large numbers.
