Tsinghua Scholars Recognized with Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award
On June 25, the 15th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award Ceremony was held at the 17th General Assembly of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Song Jian, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, an expert in cybernetics, systems engineering and aerospace technology, won the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Achievement Award, and another 40 experts won the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields.
Four Tsinghua people, including Qu Jiuhui, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, distinguished professor of the School of Environment at Tsinghua University, and researcher at the Center for Eco-Environmental Studies of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, He Jinliang, professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University, Fan Jiansheng, professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University, and Wang Jun, a Tsinghua alumnus and chief engineer of CRRC Corporation Limited, won the 15th Guanghua Engineering Technology Award.
Qu Jiuhui, born in October 1957, is an environmental engineering expert. He received his bachelor’s degree from Jilin University in 1982, and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Harbin University of Architecture in 1988 and 1992, respectively. He is currently a distinguished professor at the School of Environment, Tsinghua University, and a researcher at the Center for Ecological and Environmental Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Qu Jiuhui has made systematic innovative achievements from basic theory to engineering application in the research of theory, technology and engineering application of drinking water quality safety, the generation and transformation process mechanism of toxic and harmful substances in water, water quality risk control and pollution control, and has made important scientific and technological contributions to the safety of urban and rural drinking water and winning the battle against water pollution. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2009.
He Jinliang, born in January 1966, is a high voltage technology expert. He received a bachelor’s degree from Wuhan Institute of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering in 1984, a master’s degree from Chongqing University in 1991, and a doctorate degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1994. He is currently a professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University and director of the Institute of High Voltage and Insulation Technology. He has been engaged in the research of basic theories and core technologies of overvoltage protection of power systems for a long time, and has achieved systematic innovative results in lightning dispersion theory and grounding technology, high-performance lightning arresters and deep limiting grid overvoltage technology, large-capacity transmission pipelines and recyclable power cables, power sensors and grid monitoring technology, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of lightning protection and power transmission and transformation technology in my country.
Fan Jiansheng, born on August 8, 1975, is an expert in steel and concrete structures. He received his bachelor’s degree and doctorate in civil engineering from Tsinghua University in 1998 and 2003 respectively. He is currently a professor in the civil engineering department and director of the Institute of Structural Engineering at Tsinghua University. He is mainly engaged in the research and practice of steel-concrete composite structures, structural engineering, and bridge engineering. He is the winner of the first Science Exploration Award in the field of transportation architecture.
Wang Jun, born in November 1963, is a general technical expert of high-speed trains. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from Changsha Railway Institute in 1985 and a master’s degree in business administration for senior executives from the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University in 2010. He is currently the chief engineer and chief scientist of China CRRC Corporation Limited. He is one of the builders and leaders of my country’s high-speed train technology innovation and industrialization. He presided over the development of my country’s first domestically produced CRH2 “Harmony” high-speed EMU, helping China enter the high-speed rail era; he presided over the development of the CRH380A high-speed EMU, creating the world’s highest railway operation test speed of 486.1 kilometers per hour; organized the implementation and industrialization of the “Fuxing” series of high-speed EMU projects; led the team to overcome the key technologies of the high-speed train series, helping China’s high-speed rail become a bright “national business card”. In January 2024, he was awarded the title of the first “National Outstanding Engineer”.
As an important award in China’s engineering and technology community, the Guanghua Engineering Technology Award is awarded every two years. It was first presented in 1996 and has been awarded 15 times so far. A total of 383 scientists and one group from different engineering disciplines such as machinery, transportation, information, electronics, chemical engineering, medicine, health, and engineering management have won the award.
