Tsinghua University Hosts 7th World Philanthropy Forum: A Platform for Global Giving
The 7th World Philanthropy Forum (WPF), co-hosted by Tsinghua University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), recently opened in Beijing.
The two-day event under the theme “One Heart, Global Dream” aims to unite the strength of Chinese communities worldwide to explore new ideas, models and paths to success in philanthropy, and to collectively advance global charitable causes.
The opening ceremony was held at Tsinghua University on September 6. Zhu Yongxin, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and vice chairman of the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy, delivered a speech. Jiang Shengyao, vice chairperson of the University Council of Tsinghua University, and Rocky S. Tuan, vice-chancellor and president of the CUHK, delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was moderated by Qiao Wei, former vice chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and former chairman of the Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation of China.

Zhu Yongxin highlighted the unique role of overseas Chinese as a bridge between China and the rest of the world and their significant contributions to global philanthropy. He noted that overseas Chinese have been pioneers of modern Chinese philanthropy, active contributors to contemporary charitable activities, and important players in global philanthropy. He emphasized the need to promote their charitable achievements and spirit through various channels, and to strengthen the inheritance and promotion of philanthropic culture. Zhu stressed the importance of studying the overseas Chinese economy, embracing the principle of win-win cooperation, and recognizing the unique strength of this economic segment. He advocated for supportive policies, preferential access, an improved business environment, and better information and services to support the growth and prosperity of overseas Chinese businesses, and foster philanthropy among overseas Chinese. He also urged the use of the WPF to enhance international exchanges and cooperation, participate in global charitable affairs and activities, learn from best practices, and contribute Chinese wisdom and strength to the development of global philanthropy.

Jiang Shengyao extended a warm welcome on behalf of Tsinghua University. He noted that Tsinghua University has long been committed to cultivating a global philanthropic network. Driven by its motto of “Self-discipline and Social Commitment”, Tsinghua University actively participates in international philanthropic activities and cooperates with universities, businesses and social organizations around the world to advance philanthropic causes. He pledged that Tsinghua University will continue to leverage its strengths to promote the development of philanthropy worldwide.
Rocky S. Tuan delivers a speech.
Rocky S. Tuan emphasized that in today’s era of challenges and opportunities, it is our collective responsibility to explore more effective and sustainable ways to serve society and benefit people. Philanthropy is not only the responsibility of professional charitable organizations, but also requires the collective efforts of governments, businesses, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and individuals. He expressed his hope that the CUHK would work together with others to promote the sustainable development of philanthropy in China and around the world.
Keynote speeches were delivered by Sui Jun, a member of the Standing Committee of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC Committee on Foreign Affairs, and former Vice Chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Song Li, Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women’s Federation, Sean Stein, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, and Gianni Di Giovanni, States’ Representative and Executive Committee Member of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China.
Launching Event
To further advance global philanthropy through practical initiatives, academic exchanges, policy advocacy, talent development, and experience sharing, the 7th WPF officially launched the Global Corporate Social Responsibility Collaborative Program and the Global Philanthropy Communication Collaborative Program in the presence of the participants.
The 7th WPF was organized by the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University, the China Engagement Office of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Schwarzman College of Tsinghua University and the Center for Chinese Entrepreneurs Studies of Tsinghua University, with the support of the International Chinese Business Committee of the Overseas Chinese History Society of China and the Overseas Chinese Commercial History Committee of the Society of Chinese Commercial History. The forum was attended by over one hundred guests, including Chinese and international experts, scholars, and professionals from the charity sector.
