TU Delft Appoints New Member For The Young Academy
This year Bieke Cattoor of the department Urbanism, section Landscape Architecture, is one of the new members of The Young Academy. The Young Academy is a dynamic and innovative group of scientists and scholars with outspoken views about science and scholarship and the related policy. They represent the full breadth of science and scholarship. Their research covers a variety of topics ranging from climate justice to cellular interactions or Islamic intellectual history.
The imagination of the landscape
Bieke Cattoor studies how landscape is captured in images, focusing on everyday urban environments. She not only analyses but also designs herself, contributing practically to more liveable, sustainable, and resilient cities. Cattoor is currently working with citizen scientists and urban stakeholders on a new visualisation of the Randstad conurbation as a complex of gardens, with local residents acting as the gardeners of a more social and ecological living environment. Within The Young Academy, she represents the designing sciences, and aims to promote a more diverse approach to knowledge creation and communication.
As a landscape architecture researcher, she will introduce design research to the Young Academy’s agenda, thus opening up opportunities for a more inclusive approach to knowledge creation, acquisition, practice and communication. In addition, as an experiential academic with a physical disability, she is particularly motivated to contribute to actions that proactively promote diversity and inclusion within academic education and research.
The Young Academy
The Young Academy is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Young Academy has fifty members. All have received their doctorates less than ten years before their appointment to the Academy. They represent a broad spectrum of scientific and scholarly disciplines and work at Dutch universities and research institutes. Their membership lasts for five years, with ten members joining and leaving each year. five-year membership, they will champion projects focusing on science policy, interdisciplinarity, internationalisation, and the relationship between science and society. The ten researchers will be officially installed as members of The Young Academy on Tuesday 28 March 2023.
