Two-day AMU Neuroupdate 2023 concludes

ALIGARH : The Department of Neurosurgery, Aligarh Muslim University organized a two-day Neuroupdate-2023 conference, including a CME and an AMU Neurosurgery Alumni Meet, in association with the Aligarh Association of Neurosciences.

Addressing the inaugural session, the chief guest, Prof V. K. Jain, Senior Director, Neurosurgery, Max Hospital, Saket, New Delhi, and former Head, Department of Neurosurgery, SGPGI, Lucknow, stressed the need for the establishment of an institute of neurosciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU.

Dr Ajit Sinha, Vice Chairman, Neurosurgery, Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, highlighted the importance of clipping in cerebral aneurysms patients, instead of going for endovascular procedures only.

Dr Anirban Banerjee, Associate Director, Neurosurgery, Medanta, Gurugram, discussed the role of deep brain stimulation in Parkinson disease patients.

Dr Satyakam Baruah, Consultant Neurosurgery, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, emphasized the role of sending patients with epilepsy to dedicated epilepsy units for early surgery with better results.

Dr Deepak Singh, RMLIMS, Lucknow, and Dr Rashim Kataria, SMS Medical College, Jaipur elaborated on the treatment modalities for craniovertebral junction anomalies patients, and the discussed 3D printing in these patients before surgery.

Dr Sudhir Dubey, Medanta, Gurugram, highlighted minimal invasive approaches to treat patients with thoracic spine pathologies, as these are the regions most susceptible to injuries during surgery.

Various microsurgical and endovascular modalities for treatment of brain vascular lesions, causing stroke, were discussed by Dr Tariq Matin, Paras Hospitals, Gurugram, Dr Kamlesh Bhaisora, SGPGI, Lucknow and Dr Pragyan Sarma, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi

Prof, M.F. Hoda, organizing chairman shed light on the evolution of the Department of Neurosurgery since its establishment on 30 October 2012. He said that the contribution of the department has been validated in various national and international forums.

Prof V.K. Srivastava, Founder Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Prof Shahla Haleem (a retired Professor of Anesthesia) were felicitated on this occasion.

Prof Veena Maheshwari, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Prof Haris Manzoor, Principal and CMS, J.N. Medical College appreciated the work of the department which is catering to the patients coming from all over the western Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier, Prof Raman Sharma, Chairman of the department, welcomed the guest speakers and participants coming from different parts of the country, who also presented their work during the scientific session of the conference. He emphasized the need for organizing continued medical education programmes.

Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, Secretary, Aligarh Association of Neurosciences, expressed happiness on the participation of stalwarts of neurosurgery in the conference. He added that the main objective of holding the programme is to promote academic activities related to brain related diseases and bringing the faculty members and students at par with the new developments in neurosurgery.

Dr. Ahmed Ansari informed that more than 40 neurosurgeons from AMU are working in different parts of the country and this event has helped in reconnecting all of them through an Alumni meet held at the conclusion of the conference.

Dr. Tabish Khan said that recent advances in neurosurgery related to brain tumor, spine and stroke were discussed during the event.
