Two Odisha Communities declared Tsunami Ready

New Delhi: Since 2015, UNESCO implements the Tsunami Ready (“Tsu Ready”) programme with villages in vulnerable coastal areas.

In India, two communities in Odisha are participating in the programme. The review of Tsunami Ready indicators for Venkatraipur and Noliasahi was undertaken in December 2019 and the two communities were considered to have met the 11 indicators, and received official recognition as the first communities in the Indian Ocean region.

The Virtual Event to hand over the UNESCO-IOC Tsu Ready Recognition Certificates took place on 7th August 2020.

Dr. M. Rajeevan, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Science presented the ‘Certificate of Recognition’ and ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ to Odisha Communities. Shri G.V.V. Sarma, IAS Member Secretary of the National Disaster Management Agency presented the Certificate of Appreciation to OSDMA Officials.

The Tsunami Ready Sign for the community of Noliasahi and Venktatraipur was presented by Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati, Head of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics agency who is also the Chairwoman for the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System of IOC-UNESCO.
