UC Center for International Studies Welcomes Former President To The External Advisory Council

In the instance, the former president shared his general vision of Chile’s challenges in terms of foreign policy, as well as the main issues that should be a priority for the center in the short term.

On Monday , a new session of the External Advisory Council of the UC Center for International Studies (CEIUC) was held , chaired by the rector of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Ignacio Sánchez, and the director of the center, Jorge Sahd. In addition, the vice dean of the UC Law School, Carmen Domínguez, was present.

During the session, the former President of the Republic Eduardo Frei was formally integrated. After the rector’s opening words, the former president shared his general vision of Chile’s challenges in terms of foreign policy, as well as the main issues that should be a priority for the center in the short term. Additionally, the directors Gerardo Jofré, Marcelo Forni, Pablo Cabrera and José Miguel Insulza attended in person.

Former President Eduardo Frei will contribute to the advisory board with his experience and extensive international networks in the different challenges of the UC Center for International Studies.

For Jorge Sahd, director of the UC Center for International Studies, “the incorporation of President Eduardo Frei constitutes a milestone for the center. For the first time, a former president of the Republic joins our board, who was also vital in the international insertion of Chile, especially towards Asia-Pacific. Without a doubt, the former president will contribute with his experience and extensive international networks in the different challenges of the center ,” he said.

The advisory council is a consultative body made up of 12 members that supports the center in its definitions and strategic guidelines. “The advisory council of the center is a fundamental space to define the strategic guidelines of the center, based on the experience of former foreign ministers, diplomats, and representatives of the public and private sectors. The center gains from the experience and wisdom of its members, who throughout this decade they have shown a permanent commitment to the work of the university and international relations” , explained Sahd.

In the session, the period was reported and the main achievements were highlighted, such as the participation of members of the center in various international seminars, the publication of the book “Latin America against Asia Pacific” , the third report Political Risk Latin America , as well such as the various activities carried out by the center during the year and the main collaboration networks established in that period.

In addition to expressing their positive assessment of the work carried out by the UC International Studies Center, the advisors suggested lines of action that the center should address during the second semester. These included focusing on Asia-Pacific as a focus area, establishing new instances of center collaboration in decision-making, and strengthening ties with undergraduate and graduate students.
