The Faculty of Law researchers at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) celebrated their achievements at the recent 2022 Legal Research Foundation’s (LRF) Annual General Meeting.

In recognition of outstanding legal scholarship Professor Joseph received the JF Northey Memorial Book Award for his text, ‘Joseph on Constitutional and Administrative Law’ (5th ed). As well as accurately relating recent statutory and case law developments, it explores relevant English and New Zealand developments that have contributed to New Zealand’s unique constitutional arrangements. With a depth of legal scholarship that is not present in the other competing works, his book has been described as ‘a monumental work that spans very thoroughly the whole broad spectrum of public law in New Zealand.’

In a first for the New Zealand Legal Research Foundation, it is the second time that Professor Joseph has won the JF Northey Memorial Book Award. He also won the Award for the first edition of his text, published in 1993.

Meanwhile, Professor Scott has received the Sir Ian Barker Award for her published article, ‘Does Aotearoa New Zealand Need an Oceans Policy for Modern Ocean Governance?’ 35 (2021) Ocean Yearbook 273 – 339. The article was described as ‘a magisterial contribution which will be a reference point’ for future research, policy and legislation for the conservation and management of New Zealand’s oceans.

Amo Matua | Executive Dean of Law Professor John Page is delighted to see the two key legal publications awards go to academics from the UC Faculty of Law this year. “It is an impressive achievement by both Professor Scott and Professor Joseph, and I look forward to seeing what they achieve next in their relative fields of research.”

The JF Northey Memorial Book Award carries a cash prize of $2,000 and the Sir Ian Barker Published Article Award carries a cash prize of $1,500.
