With the aim of disseminating the discipline of data science, the Faculty of Mathematics will teach two free introductory courses to the programming languages ”R” and “Python”, which allow advanced data analysis processes to be carried out.

With this activity, the statistical studies unit of the Faculty of Mathematics, Data UC, will launch the offer of its graduate programs that will be extended to all regions other than the Metropolitan Region, thanks to virtuality.

“We feel that we have a pending commitment with the other regions of Chile, which for a long time have not been able to access our academic programs. Thanks to the fact that we have already consolidated our programs in virtual format, this 2023 our Diplomas in Statistics and Data Science will have a special version aimed especially at professionals from regions other than the Metropolitan, in an e-learning format with live classes, so that students will be able to learn and interact directly with our teachers, as if they were in the classroom,” said Alexis Alvear, Executive Director of Data UC.

“This 2023 our Diplomas in Statistics and Data Science will have a special version aimed especially at professionals from regions other than the Metropolitan, in an e-learning format with live classes, so students will be able to learn and interact directly with our teachers , as if they were in the classroom” – Alexis Alvear, Executive Director of Data UC.

Regarding the free courses, Alvear explains: “these will allow the participants to learn one of the fundamental tools in data science: computer programming, which together with mathematical and statistical knowledge and data visualization constitute the three fundamental pillars for a data scientist. In this context, statistical programming is essential to automate processes of cleaning, preparation, analysis and modeling of large volumes of data. R and Python are the most used software in data science ”.

Those interested in participating in the course will be able to learn about the main functionalities of both programs. “These will be introductory courses, where they will learn the interface and the basic processes for importing databases, installing packages, and descriptive analysis and graph generation operations,” Alvear added.

Online classes will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., from Tuesday, January 17 to Thursday, February 2. Those interested in participating can complete an application form on the datascience.uc.cl website, where they will be asked to submit a letter of interest. Those who pass the workshop will receive a certificate of participation .
