UC Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering academic César Ramírez was selected by the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) to join a global network that conducts cutting-edge research in all life science disciplines.

In Chile, the specialist in Biophysics and Protein Engineering helped identify a variety of Antarctic enzymes that can degrade or “eat plastics” at room temperature . He was also recognized for helping to understand how certain proteins govern bacteria.

César Ramírez was selected along with seven other young scientists from India, Singapore and Taiwan, who from January 2023 will receive financial support and access to a variety of training and work activities in the European research network.

EMBO is an organization made up of more than 1,900 leading scientists, including some Nobel Prize winners, that contributes to the careers of talented researchers around the world. In addition, it promotes the collaboration of studies and makes their contributions visible.

Research
In 2020, the international magazine Biophysical Journal recognized the UC researcher for his excellent contribution to science, helping to understand how the pathogenic capacity of multi-resistant bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Salmonella works molecularly.

Last year, meanwhile, the UC researcher identified a variety of Antarctic enzymes that can degrade or “eat plastics” at room temperature. This in collaboration with the University of Leipzig in Germany.
