UCSF Health Hospitals Secure Top National ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety
UCSF Health hospitals in Mission Bay, Parnassus Heights and Mount Zion have earned “A” ratings in the spring 2024 Hospital Safety Grades from The Leapfrog Group, reflecting the gold standard of excellence in patient safety for U.S. hospitals.
Almost 3,000 hospitals nationally were assessed this spring by the Leapfrog organization, a national nonprofit watchdog that conveys its highest marks for excellence in protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. The grades, which Leapfrog assigns as an A, B, C, D or F, are based on more than 30 measurements of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have instituted to prevent them.
The elite designation was awarded to the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, and UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion. UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay also received an elite “Straight A” designation, reflecting five or more consecutive A ratings by the group.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program that focuses exclusively on the preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients daily, according to national statistics. The peer-reviewed grades are updated twice annually, in the spring and fall.

UCSF Medical Center consistently ranks among the nation’s top hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report, and has been named among the nation’s leaders in quality and safety across health care’s most highly regarded rating systems. It received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for its quality of care, has achieved the gold standard “magnet recognition” for nursing excellence for more than a decade, and is listed among the top-performing academic medical centers in quality and safety by the health care performance improvement company Vizient, Inc.
