UEL Welcomes New Head of Teacher Education to Advance Academic Leadership
The University of East London has appointed Ciro Genovese as the new Head of Teacher Education. With a rich and varied background in education and a passion for transforming lives through inspirational teaching, Mr Genovese brings a wealth of experience and vision to his new role.
Having personally experienced the impact of an exceptional educator during his school years, Mr Genovese dedicated himself to serving pupils and students, inspiring others with a passion for teaching. His personal journey through education has profoundly shaped his vision for the field.
Mr Genovese says that at the heart of his vision is the development of outstanding teachers who possess the courage to push boundaries and seek what is possible for their pupils, students, and the communities they serve. His goal, he says, is to foster a love of teaching and create a high-quality teaching, learning, and research experience that inspires and transforms.
He said,
I am absolutely delighted and honoured to be appointed as the Head of Teacher Education at UEL. My extensive experience in placement-driven provision has underscored the transformative impact of practical experience in shaping exceptional teachers.
“My vision extends beyond the classroom – I am deeply committed to raising the profile of teaching across east London and beyond, so that it is not only recognised as a highly prestigious profession but also a highly desirable one.
“Together, with our strong partnerships across east London and innovative approaches, we aim to set new standards in teacher development, elevate the status of teaching, and inspire a new generation of educators who will shape the future of our communities.”
With well over a decade of experience in teacher education, Mr Genovese has worked across various settings, ages, and abilities. His teacher education leadership expertise spans early years, primary, secondary, and further education, including both practice-first, undergraduate, and traditional PGCE routes. He previously served as the Associate Head of School (Partnerships) at another large provider, overseeing partnerships with 400+ schools and colleges and supporting the development of over 1,000 teachers.
Mr Genovese has a track record of leading change and fostering collaboration. He has successfully developed new models for teacher education and led large-scale provision with exceptional outcomes. His strategic leadership and collaborative approach have consistently driven positive change in the education landscape.
In addition to his practical experience, Mr Genovese is dedicated to research that informs and enriches teacher education. He is actively engaged in research, including exploring placement-led teacher education, neurodivergence and assessment, and using an anti-racist lens to develop teacher education. His commitment to research aligns with his goal of creating innovative and sector-leading teacher education provision at UEL.
